Checkpoint 19: Bishan Fire Station (C9)Group photo at Bishan Fire Station Photo of area surrounding Bishan Fire StationMGR: 29153355Coordinates: 1º 19.2′ N 103º 50.63′ ESketch of Bishan Fire Station. Scale 1:500Description: Bishan Fire Station is located near blocks 301 to 313 at Marymount Lane. There are also two petrol stations located near fire station, one opposite the road while the other being right beside it. There are many traffic lights situated around the area surrounding the fire station as well. Marymount MRT station is also close by. Due to Bishan Fire Station being a building for emergencies, the number of traffic lights that have been erected to prevent drivers from speeding in that area to cause minimal accidents. The location of the fire station is to allow the vehicles to reach the places of emergency if a fire occurs. The petrol stations are also located beside or opposite the building to allow quick refueling by the fire fighters. The training rooms in the building would serve as a way to train the cadets to be both prepared and physically for for any situations that arise. The cadets would also be able to reach their workplace faster by taking the train which is nearby. This checkpoint could be improved by changing the locations of the traffic lights as the way to walk to the building is slowed by the pattern of the traffic lights. It would also allow the public to have a more convenient way to walk past the building as well as to allow quicker deployment of vehicles

Therefore, it is of utmost importance that this place is easily accessible. The Singapore Scout Association has only 2 entrances. During National Competitions and Events, it can get very congested and cause inconvenience for scouts to enter. To prevent such things from happening again, another entrance an be opened.

Group Reflection: National Exploration Challenge 2014 provided us with an enriching and fulfilling experience which allow us to bond closer as a group. Throughout the Journey when we faced challenges such as not knowing how to get from one checkpoint to another, we put our differences aside so as to work towards a common goal in mind. We improved our navigation skills, critical thinking skills and other important skills together as one group. We have explored new places that we have never seen before and now we have a bigger picture of our beloved Singapore. From this hike we learnt that scouting was is not merely an activity or CCA, but it is indeed a way of life. If we were given a second opportunity, we would plan our route more thoroughly such that we would know the most efficient way to travel from checkpoint to checkpoint. We also managed to embrace and learn about many new things while traveling from checkpoint to checkpoint. We have finally come to realize the true meaning of being prepared. Lastly we would like to thank the organizers of NEC as this experience has truly enlightened us. Individual Reflection: Rilwan In my opinion, I feel that this National Exploration Challenge has provided me with an unforgettable experience. Through this, I managed to polish my exploration skills. I find that I am more bonded with my group and I feel this will help me to work more easily with them. Therefore this National Exploration Challenge has not only equipped me with the right skills, and also improved my teamwork and team chemistry. As the leader of my group, I am proud of every of my members as I know that they have done the best that they can for themselves and for the team. I am also glad that I had the opportunity to pass down the knowledge and teachings that I have gained to my juniors. Overall, It was an enlightening experience. Winston I feel that this National Exploration Challenge was a memorable experience. I still remember how we persevered through all the hard times. We set aside our differences and work together as a team to achieve our common goal, GOLD for the National Exploration Challenge. I find that we have earned something invaluable through the hardship we faced so I do not regret using a lot of my time on this challenge. I am glad that i was able to contribute to my team as a patrol leader and have instilled in them what was instilled in me throughout my 3 years of scouting. In a nutshell, it was a memorable episode. Norman As a senior, I feel like I have guided my juniors well. I taught them some orienteering skills together with my fellow sec 3s and I ensure that we were prepared in all situations. Many a times we faced difficulties but we overcome it as a team. Finding a checkpoint maybe hard but when we put our heads together, we achieved success. Therefore, I feel that this National Exploration Challenge has taught us teamwork and I really feel it made me know my group mates better. Overall, The whole journey from phase 1 to phase 4 was an eventful one. Daniel As a Sec 2 and patrol second in my team, I have learned a lot of meaningful and useful skills that can be applied next year as a patrol leader. I had also participated in the South Area Orienteering Competition, and the experience I gained from that competition truly did benefit me in this competition. I hope to participate in future competitions like this so as to increase my knowledge about scouting. I feel proud to be in this team as we had achieved the end which we hand in mind, which was every member doing their best and leaving no regrets behind. In conclusion, it was an awesome experience. Enver Being one of the Sec 2s in this team truly benefited me generally as I am a changed person after this competition. My decision making skills have greatly improved after this competition and I am capable of making critical decisions quickly now in the event when something goes wrong or something unexpected happens. This competition had not only been a competition as it also changed my perspective on scouting and exploration. 21 Century Scouting surely is unique compared to before. In a nutshell, this has been an unforgettable journey. Aqil I was the only Sec 1 in the team and I have to say that my seniors have truly guided me well throughout this whole journey. Being the member who was most unfamiliar with orienteering, my seniors gave me the extra help that I needed so that I could support them well in this competition. The experience i gained in this competition truly would benefit me in future events and competitions too. This is only the beginning of my journey. Overall, this whole event was very enriching, Heres a photo we took at the end of the hike, Credits: Firstly we would like to give thanks to all the Rilwan's Dad and Enver's Dad for offering us a ride. It may be only for a short distance but every small things counts. So once again thanks! Secondly We would also like to thank our Scout leader and teachers for providing us great guidance. Lastly we would like to thank the Singapore Scout Association, for providing us with the opportunity to take part in such a meaningful competition.
